Hi everyone

I have been on here a lot recently talking about my poor feet or about retiring due to ill health and I have had some wonderful support from you all. But, now for the first time ever I have woken up with swollen fingers and sore joints on both my middle fingers. This is new for me and I am not really sure what is happening. Any ideas as I dont see my nurse till Thursday.

I am sorry you have something else to suffer. I am pretty new to this as I was only diagnosed two years ago but I have found out in this time that RA is very sneaky and moves onto any joints it can find. With me it seems to move around my body. When it gets fed up eating at my ankle, it will move onto my fingers. Your RA is obviously not under control and your Rheumy team need to look at your medication. All I can suggest until Thursday is that you perhaps try some ice packs on your fingers to reduce the inflammation and up the pain killers.

I hope you find some relief soon.

Hello Louise

I wake up every morning with all my finger knuckle joints on my right hand hurting and my index finger and middle finger on my left. Making it very painful to bend my fingers. I've just got use to it now. Been told it will be inflammation in the tendons. It gets less painful as the day goes by. Not yet had any swelling though. I did wake up one morning last May with my index finger on my left hand bent down onto the palm of my hand......boy was that painful to move.

RA does seem to move around our bodies, I always have visions of a little devil running around me shouting peek a boo, catch me if you can. I have been told that according to my bloods the disease is under control, but I would really like to know what under control really is like and what it means.

Hi Louise
Sorry your fingers are joining in the fun as well now.. Like Jackie and Paula I find that the RA moves randomly around my body especially in the evening when im sitting down,I never know which joint will play up (usually at least 3 or 4). I sometimes soak my hands in warm water and that helps a bit. Hope things settle down and good luck on Thursday.

Hi Louise

Nothing is happening ... that's RA! It does flit about all over the place, but you may find it disappears from those joints as quickly as it appeared. Sometimes over use of a joint, even unwittingly, can cause inflammation and pain. Have you perhaps been using those joints more before it happened? Perhaps knocked them?

Like the feet, the hands too contain a lot of small joints and RA has a habit of hitting these smaller joints. Jackie's advice is good, wrapped cold packs and up the pain relief.

Good luck with your appointment ThumpUp

Hi Louise,
Seems to be the mornings for me when I wake up to find out what's working and what's not. My RA is a little monster not Paula's devil, something akin to a Monster Munch! Anyway, the last few weeks its been running from one shoulder to another, I can sometimes predict what will hurt because I know that spending 2 hours planting onion sets will make my ankles and wrists hurt more than usual the following day but sometimes its just random. Just like Paula everything's apparently under control now but some days it doesn't seem like it at all, I have the same question on my list for my rheummy appointment next month, if I get a straight answer Paula I'll let you know. I find hot water bottles and wheat bags good, a couple of extra anti-inflammatories then some painkillers, bottle of chardonay..........I wish!
Take care
Sara

Hello Louise.

Sorry to hear about your feet and fingers. I suffer badly with both so fully understand what pain you are in.
I try and keep my fingers flat when I go to bed to eleviate the pain. I put a splint on one hand and the other
I put under my pillow. However as the night progresses I obviously move . I find if I have done too much
my fingers are worse and I get horrid shooting pains as well as the swelling and painful joints.

Hope your appointment is fulfilling on Thursd

hi

sorry its moving about- its rotten this RA!

3 things to suggest

1) Get a hand waxer. they are used for manicures and you dip your hands in 5 times each side, put a sandwich bag over the top and then a tea cosy on each hand (you will look VERY attractive!RollEyes ) but have very soothed hands...

2) Get an old ice cream tub and fill with uncooked lentils. put into the back of the fridge. squidge your hands into it....

3) when you get up in the morning. get your hands into some hot water with a nice smelling oil dripped in, make it as hot as you can bear without burning. gently move your fingers- NEVER force.
